British military welcomes U.S. troop surge

KABUL, Afghanistan, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama's decision to send more troops to Afghanistan will enhance British troops' security there, British military sources said.

Most of Britain's 9,000 troops are currently deployed in the Taliban-infested Helmand province and the BBC quoted the military sources as saying the additional U.S. troops would provide better security in the region.

Britain is also committed to boosting its troop strength by another 500, bringing the total to about 9,500. Other NATO countries also are expected to send more troops.

Some of the additional U.S. forces could be used in areas that are still under Taliban control or in the north of the province where British troops are thinly spread, the BBC said.

The sources told the BBC the additional coalition forces would also speed up the training of the Afghan army and police, which is one of the main objectives in the new Afghan strategy.

The sources said some of the Afghan areas could be under the control of the own forces as early as next year.
