China: At least 13 killed in storms

BEIJING, July 4 (UPI) -- Heavy rainstorms in southern China have killed at least 13 people and displaced hundreds of thousands more, authorities said.

In Jiangxi province, two people were killed, three were missing and more than 100,000 were evacuated during the heaviest rains of the summer, Xinhua, China's state-run news agency, reported Saturday.

The province received nearly 4 inches of rain Friday as hundreds of thousands of acres of crops were damaged and 8, 231 houses collapsed, Xinhua reported.

In Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, four people were missing as of Friday with more than 11,000 people displaced and 53,300 head of cattle killed. In Hunan province, seven people died and one was missing with 6,500 head of cattle reported drowned.

Further to the north, people in Beijing experienced a week of temperatures near 100 degrees Fahrenheit with meteorologists predicting the region would see lower-than-usual rainfalls.
