Terror infests Pakistan

Font size:

Toronto, ON, Canada, — Terror has become a daily affair in Pakistan, which has hit civilians the most due to suicide bombers mingling with them. Such attacks are sometimes a result of the Pashtun tribesmen’s pique at the Pakistani government; other times they are interfaith rivalries between the Sunni and Shiite communities. In addition, they are also “bomb battles” between rival political party activists in big cities.

This all began when Pakistan started training terrorists for attacks in Indian-controlled Kashmir. When this met with immediate success, terror activities were expanded to cover the rest of India. The last attack took place in Mumbai in November 2008.

With every successful explosion terrorists have become more sophisticated, with some using bombs to settle their local grievances. In October last year a Sunni resistance group reportedly carried out a suicide bomb attack on Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards that killed several top commanders.

Pakistani authorities never anticipated that terrorists would turn against them. In 2009, some 6,000 Pakistanis died in terror attacks, making it one of the bloodiest years of domestic violence. Half of those killed were security personnel.

Terror attacks declined considerably in India’s Kashmir region in 2009, partly due to mounting international pressure on Pakistan and partly due to the vigil mounted by Indian security forces. Deaths from terrorist attacks included 55 civilians and 76 security personnel.

Until 2001, Pakistan was untouched by India’s accusations that it was responsible for acts of violence in India. However, the 9/11 terror attacks in the United States changed that. Pakistani security services, although not directly responsible for 9/11, had acted as facilitators to the terror masters in Afghanistan.

This became common knowledge, and the United States mounted pressure on Pakistan to dismantle its terror business completely, offering aid and military hardware in return. But the campaign never succeeded. The Pakistanis pleaded ignorance of terrorist activities, while winking at their organizations and training facilities on their territory.

While Pakistan seemed unconcerned with terror elsewhere, trouble began brewing at home as al-Qaida and the Taliban made the frontier region of Pakistan their new home. That brought the United States into the picture, with its successful drone attacks to eliminate leaders of terrorist groups.

The U.S. action caught al-Qaida and the Taliban by surprise. They pushed the local Pashtun tribes to rebel against the Pakistani government. Some of them did, resulting in the present impasse in Pakistan.

Now the same terrorists are biting the hand that fed them. The United States managed to convince the Pakistani army to go after the terrorists, which was easier said than done. As the Pakistani army entered terror-infested areas in 2009, they suffered heavy causalities. Besides, terrorists relocated themselves to different areas of Pakistan, making the army’s task doubly difficult.

Will terror ever relent in Pakistan? It is highly unlikely. First the United States will have to withdraw from Afghanistan, but even if it does, al-Qaida and the Afghani Taliban will find excuses to continue fighting. Second, no efforts have been made to reform the Pakistani intelligence services that head various terror organizations.

The United States has been on the wrong foot all along in dealing with Pakistan. Prior to 2001, the U.S. and British intelligence services encouraged religious elements within the Pakistani security apparatus. They did it to defeat the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, and later encouraged the religious elements to maintain law and order after the Soviets withdrew from the region.

The United States did not realize that it had created a monster in the form of the Taliban. The monster would be unleashed if the Taliban again grabs power in Kabul and invites al-Qaida into its midst.

It was the United States that created Pakistan’s intelligence services, from 1980 to 1988. In addition, the Pakistani army was pampered with modern weapons and even allowed to steal nuclear weapon technology from Europe and the United States. When caught, Pakistani agents were let off lightly. Since 2001 more new weapons were offered in the name of fighting terror. The Pakistanis took the weapons but did nothing to help the United States in return.

The present Afghani Taliban, after its demolition by the United States in 2001, was created by Pakistan from 2002 to 2007. The Pakistani army provided weapons and training in civilian garb. Their fundraising has been based on drug smuggling and through Pakistanis living in the Middle East.

All sanctuaries for rest and recreation for the Taliban are in Pakistan. There is a silver lining though – the Pakistanis are not helping the Arab, Uighur and Chechen elements of al-Qaida. They are on their own and suffer the most during U.S.-led drone attacks.

What made the loyal Pashtuns rebel against Pakistan? Pashtuns in the Northwest frontier region are loyal to Pakistan, although their loyalty is under severe test today. The situation changed when convoys escorted by Pakistani security forces came under attack and army personnel were killed. Later, deeply religious Mullahs in the frontier region vowed to expel Pakistanis from the region. They even captured a few districts there to make their point. This led to a larger conflict with the army.

The situation is at an impasse, with the Pashtun loyalty factor under severe strain. Although the Afghani Taliban is not encouraging the Pakistani chapter, it seems both are increasingly driven by a common goal – to drive out the United States and Pakistan from Afghanistan and the frontier region. This may be the beginning of the formation of Pashtunistan, a homeland for Pashtuns. This demand has been in cold storage for a while but can be revived with ease.

What makes Pakistanis confront India so diligently? Kashmir is the face of the Muslim desire to rule over India. Today, they are fighting over Kashmir – it that is resolved they will think of something else. It is their relentless pursuit to rule from New Delhi, which is the crux of the problem.

The British took away power from the Muslims in 1857 and slowly handed it back to the majority Hindus. By 1947, Hindus were ready to rule and had learned to pick up the sword again. When Pakistan invaded Kashmir in 1948, it was beaten. Again in 1965 and in 1971 it was beaten. The Pakistani army’s surrender in 1971 in Dhaka has not sat well with them for the last 40 years. They wish to avenge it and tried in 1998 in Kargil, but lost heavily. Still, they want to keep trying.

Presently, the Pakistani army is being trained to counter India in war. Soldiers are told that one Pakistani soldier equals 30 Indian soldiers, although facts prove otherwise. India with its bigger economy and resources is doing a fine job in keeping its enemies out of its territory. If Pakistan starts a conflict, it could be driven back within 94 hours.

With no way to beat its favorite enemy India, Pakistan has turned to jihadism. It did not count on al-Qaida succeeding spectacularly in its 9/11 attacks. Also, when it encouraged the Afghani Taliban, it did not expect the emergence of the Pakistani Taliban.

Today Pakistan is in a worse shape than it was ten years back. There is no end in sight to its internal fighting. India, for sure, is now beyond its reach.

Man, coming to this site and reading the reviews is becoming more and more tedious by the day…and might I add extremely routineous!

The same story seems to unfold, unfailingly with every passing article putting up on this site..:

No matter what the issue of discussion is,some idiot will fly off on a totally different tangent and bring in topics most unrelated to the debate at hand…

Al Louis bin Ladin; my friend I’ve pointed this out to you before as well… why in the sweet Gods name do you feel the need to spew digital crap that has absolutely no bearing to common sense or even the matter at hand. Seriously, are you demented or something or were you not hugged enough as a child and feel the need to seek unwarranted and skewed attention at all time??

And poor Guna, fighting on bravely in the face of such stupendous brainless twitters!!Man U deserve a Victoria Cross for even attempting to type a rejoinder to such empty headed morons. Trust me mate, these jackasses also know that they are making colossal fools of themselves (or the countries/ causes they espouse)..such filth of the modern world is best left unfettered!!

based on a true story.....

Paki's v/s Sikh Regiment
Scene: Trench warfare on Pakistan border, Sikh regiment on one side.

Kartar Singh gets a bright idea, shouts, "Oye Abdul!" A guy gets up from other trench, "Kya hai be" Kartar Singh shoots!! BANG. The guy is shot dead!

Kartar Singh shouts again, "Oye Karim" 2 guys stand up, "Kya hai"
BANG BANG both khalaas are gone

Kartar Singh shouts again,"Oye Mustafa!" 2 more, BANG-BANG! dono khalaas!

Pakis get worried, they think: Sardarji log, when did they get so smart? They decide to try the trick themselves.

"Abe Gurdev Singh" silence
"Oye Gurdev Singh!!" silence

"O bhai, Gurdev Singh!"

This time some one says, "Gurdev Singh ko kaun bula raha hai re?"
Paki gets up, "Main"

BANG! He goes!

pakistan has swedish awac, which is better than russian and chinese but no match for american. don't know much about the jewish one. the latest F16 to pakistan is not packed with high tech as the one for USA. the purpose of the joint exercises was to train indians to "how to deal with Pak's F16s".
India MUST choose F18 and add few squadrons of lightening II

SARA I am sure you witnessed the recent American invasion of Iraq. First, there was a propaganda war. in which, USA portrayed Iraq's army a dreadful one. then there were hundreds of sorties to take out the dreadful lethality of sadam hossein, in which USA crippled iraq's army (including artillery, tanks etc) and its navy. after that it was like a "cakewalk" for the US marines to walk in iraq. so what did USA need? the superior air power. USA has opened the doors for India to take most of on the shelf weaponry what it has for its own army. the recent unconditional offer of "JSF 35-2, lightening". america also knows that India will not have any confrontation with China. So who else is left? the phuckin' pakis. America wants an "allied" Baluchistan with it's huge gas and oil reserves and the "islamic bombs" gifted by rogue PLA, not pakistan for jihadis. jihadis can be wiped out in a single strike if you know what I mean. while harisuck will pray that the 5th fleet come's to PAKIstan's aid, but then who knows that by then, the 5th fleet will be sold to India.

Great 30 minute radio discussion on "Obama, India & Pakistan" between Ted Koppel (very renowned US TV reporter) and experts from the US administration / defense team. Around 2 mins 15 seconds into it, they start talk about the US govt. simulating a war game on a massive screen for the Indian / Pakistan defense attaches.

The simulation showed that India will immediately overpower Pakistan in the air, then take over a big Pakstani city in just 3 to 5 days...and win the conventional war very easily ("at will" is the exact wording)

As no links are allowed in the comments section simply google "NPR Ted Koppel Pakistan India Obama administration". Then listen to the interview. The Pakistani generals are well aware of this reality

the Su30 MKI thrust vectors feature make it superior compare to whatever american planes they have currently.... combination of naval blockade and air superiority will crush pakistan and even china....

china depends on oil supply through the middle east, malacca strait.... ...thats the biggest weak point for chinese navy..... they are building port in hostile countries in the indian ocean but all is not quite ready.... unlike US navy, chinese navy will be severely weak away from taiwan coast....

pakistan with internal prob will not be able to fight with right mind ....they will lose as usual....

if chinky join in, be sure that they will face tibetan, xinjiang and maybe even taiwanese provocation if war breaks out.... china will face maybe 4 or 5 problems at the same time..... tibet, taiwan, xinjiang, india and another tiananmen no 2....

Dont say this as a very simple thing .If india decides to attack through air .Paksitani's can easily track that bcoz they bought the AWACS FROM GERMANY.I think u know about the operation of AWACS .And also they have nuclear weapons and also chinese support .Remember what Chinese foreign minister said after mumbai attack .So what india can do is it can Defend its border from both china and pakistan once Artillery modernization is complete

sara,

i believe if there was a war, pakis will surely lose.... and this could be the final battle...

the war will be similar to gulf war style....

crush the pakistani airforce first, destroy their radar system, telecomunication and naval blockade including destroying the main karachi port.....as they are blocked in the sea and air, their food supply, oil etc will be low and severe......

the final blow will be from the Army..... the chinese will not be able to do much to help pakis....

i dont accept with the point u said we can send pakistan in 94 hours if u have seen the recent report about indian defence committe to parliment it says
1) indian army artillery capability is only 50%
2) Indain army artillery lacks night-vision capability it's just 20% but pakistan is 60% china is 100%
3)indian army never added a single artillery after 1986 bofors scandal
That's y Army is trying the FMS route for Ultra-light Howtizers from U.S
4)Indian armys air defence capability is only now gaining momentum with Isreal supplying its SPYDER system but takes time
5)The indian army suffered heavy casuality in kargil of about 80% death in indain army is bcoz of artillery death Boz indian army dont have WEAPON LOCATING RADAR DURING KARGIL.BUT PAKISTANIS HAD
6)And the Boforz which yielded victory whose india production agreement is finished by 2000 So army went to purchase T-90 whose AC-failed during trails in thar-desert
7) The Above reason i have mentioned is the main reason why indian army didnt go for a war with pakistan

As artillery plays a important role in a war this is where our army is lagging .Bcoz of this stupid politicans our Great army is suffering Right?

The ministry said the attacks were perpetrated by extremists who wanted to weaken the country's commitment to racial harmony, one of the key draws for foreign investors.

About 9 per cent of Malaysia's 28 million people are Christian, most of whom are ethnic Chinese or Indian. Muslims make up 60 per cent of the population and most are ethnic Malays.

"It showed that, after 52 years of living together, nation building and national unity is in tatters," said Charles Santiago, an opposition member of Parliament. "The church attacks shattered notions of Malaysia as a model secular Muslim nation in the eyes of the international community.

Firebombs have been thrown at seven other churches nationwide since Friday, with another splashed with black paint.

Religious minorities in Malaysia have often complained about what they say is institutionalized religious discrimination as Islam takes on increasing dominance.

Malaysia is heading toward dangerous waters," said James Chin, political science lecturer at Monash University in Malaysia. "Minorities are under siege and feel they don't have a place in Malaysia anymore," he said.

9 church attacks spark instability in Malaysia as Christians pray for unity over Allah
By Eileen Ng (CP) – 4 days ago

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia strongly condemned attacks on nine Christian churches and sought to assure foreign governments Monday of its commitment to religious freedom for minorities.

The attacks, which started Friday, were apparently triggered by a Dec. 31 High Court decision that overturned a government ban on Roman Catholics' using "Allah" to refer to their God in the Malay-language edition of their main newspaper, the Herald.

On Monday, the Home Ministry held a one-hour briefing for about 70 foreign diplomats to assure them that the situation was under control. The ministry pledged to "protect the sanctity" of the diversity of the country's religions and said police would step up patrols at churches and mosques around the country.
