BEIJING, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- China's television watchdog has banned any series based on online games or remade from foreign shows.
The new State Administration of Film, Radio and Television guidelines also say that shows depicting events in China's revolutions must be clear about the good and bad guys and that family dramas must limit the amount of family conflict, China Daily reported.
The guidelines also say historical dramas must be accurate and that series based on online novels are "not encouraged."
The guidelines were published on a microblog associated with the China Script Web site in a post that said they were released at a national conference of scriptwriters. An anonymous official told the Beijing News on Thursday that the post was accurate.
Both scriptwriters and their audience said the guidelines would make television less interesting. Xu Kai, a blogger who described herself as a fan of historical dramas, said that characters who are either wholly good or bad will be stereotypes while shows that are totally accurate are likely to be boring.
