LUCKNOW, India, May 6 (UPI Asia) – Seventeen-year-old lovers hanged themselves Friday night at a house in a village near the state capital of India's Uttar Pradesh state after their families refused to accept their decision to marry.
Sant Ram was alone at home when his girlfriend, Reeta Rawat, came to meet him. They locked themselves in and put a single noose around both their necks.
Hundreds of villages crowded outside the house as the police took out the dead bodies and sent them for autopsies.
No suicide note was recovered from them, the police said.
In India's traditional societies, especially in the villages, refusal of families to accept a married couple is almost certain to result in its ostracism.
