Kathmandu, Nepal, December 24 — Eviction, murder, extortion, violence and intimidation continue unabated in Nepal while political parties spend their time and energy wrangling in discussions. People are suffering due to lack of law and order, uncontrolled inflation and high commodity prices.
Political leaders take no responsibility nor have an appropriate plan for the welfare of the people. In fact, they are planning less and lack both, vision and thought. The people now believe that leaders are immune to the problems of the people and do not feel obligated to serve the general public. Political leaders are hungry and thirsty only for power and so, always like to remain on the frontline of national politics.
"Politics in Nepal seems for own sake or for leader sake, but not for people sake. We see talking politics men-to-men, leader-to-leader and party-to-party. Nepal, on the appetite of a healthy leadership, is seeking the best national leader - who is that?" asked Dr. Surendra Pradhanag in Kathmandu.
He further said, "As the present study on the political situation of the country shows, the general public have raised a hue and cry during political crisis for peace and harmony. But, they are facing hardships. The country is under the cloud of uncertainty and violence is not good."
Nepal is facing the unsettled landscape and constitutional challenges in each of its political exercises. He further added, "People want to see the political leaders held more accountable under the laws and regulations of the national constitution."
Let the people decide what policies they want. People's democracy must not be limited to paper and speeches. In Nepal, national politics must not be for political leaders, but aimed at the welfare of the people.
No change has been experienced or seen in Nepalese politics although politicians talk about democracy for the people. The strength of any democracy is its people. However, Nepal's 22.2 million people live in fear. The instability of national politics has shut the doors of democracy on the people, who are instead facing more dangers in every walk of life.
"The country's politics remain exceedingly tense and dangerous. This time, we can expect nothing than the picturesque of dispute and quarrel for power sharing and dirty politics for personal benefit. For the national interest and people's welfare, the present national politics could not have been set at all. Anyway, we need people-oriented democracy not leader-oriented," Pradhanag said.
The system of real democracy in the country must be established. No progress is possible and nothing can help the people unless national politics is free from vandalism, insurgency, personal selfishness and danger of power politics in real terms.
