The reigning queen of my heart: my Mum

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, May 15 — TO SEE HER IS TO LOVE HER, AND TO LOVE HER FOREVER, FOR NATURE MADE HER WHAT SHE IS AND NEVER MADE SUCH ANOTHER!!

Mere words cannot express adequately all that is in my heart, dearest Mum. Alas, had I another mode of expression, I would fully utilise it, but in the absence of such medium, I now humbly put my thoughts on paper using the very words that you were instrumental in teaching me as my first teacher.

Most lovable Mother, let it be known that my love for you will never end, for I liken you to light on blindness, gentlest of the gentle, chaste and gentle you kept me, and on my journey into life, you helped my every endeavour.

Let it be known that I appreciate you from the very bottom of my heart for always being the lily of serenity, the sweet rose of the garden of my heart on whose milk I was nourished. You continue to nourish me with your intuitive words and advice.

You helped in times of grave necessity. You never hesitated to show me you are my mother. I would like to crown you the "Queen Of My Heart".

You taught me what vice and sin is and, by the same token, what virtue and hard work is.

You live an exemplary life, a living witness of humility. I can't help but emulate you. I want to fasten myself to your heart by your own virtues.

There were times in my life when I needed someone to talk to, and you were there, as large as life. In my happiness you partook, in my sorrows I found you ever willing to lend a patient ear, a knowing heart. What more could a child ask for from a mum?

Your wonderful qualities are truly God-bestowed. How else could you have given so much and taken so little? Your selfless and unconditional love and care for me and my siblings, your sincere devotion to matters of the household, your immaculate housekeeping, your culinary prowess, and your thousand and one sacrifices and penances during our formative and growing years have made us what we are today - useful and productive citizens. Dearest Mum, we could never thank you enough.

What is the definition of a close friend?
someone I see often
someone I can trust
someone I can call on for help
someone I can call reliable
someone whose company I enjoy
My mum is also my closest friend, she is all of the above to me.

A successful relationship is the most effective form of social support. It is also a two-way street; it consists of a sympathetic listener, one offering helpful advice, providing emotional support, social acceptance and mobility in a nuclear family structure, giving actual help or financial help and simply doing ordinary things together like eating and drinking. The meaningful mother-daughter rapport that I enjoy presently is the result of one woman's - i.e. my dearest mother's - farsightedness, presence of mind, and humane qualities that shine through her and shine through everything she touches. I dare say my mum has got the "Midas touch".

It is through you and through your positive, assertive behaviour that I learned to express my feelings, needs, and legitimate opinions candidly and honestly, and I write to give thanks for the greatest teacher that you have been to all of us, teaching us what clear, direct, and inoffensive communication of our needs and opinions is all about in the adult world of everyday living. To you alone, I give credit for teaching us self-expression effectively and appropriately.

Patience is a virtue, they say. You have demonstrated to us what patience can achieve in the face of adversity. Although great emotional and intellectual resources are demanded when faced with adversaries, you instilled in us the equally great virtues of establishing and rescuing our dignities.

Problems will be there in all stages of life but "up man and try" were always your words of encouragement. You are that pillar of strength that I have come to terms with. Your words of encouragement and strength in overcoming problems cause me to emulate you.

Not forgetting your community service, you sowed in me the first seeds of compassion for my fellow human beings, whenever I saw you giving alms to the beggar at our doorstep, in the form of cash, rice and other edibles. At festivals, your gifts of clothes, shoes, toys, etc. to the unfortunate few is indeed heart-stirring. I thank you for instilling in me kind thoughts for my neighbours.

As a token of appreciation, I offer you this poem for being the mother you are and for the virtues you embody.

What a friend we have in our mum, all our sorrows and griefs to bear, what a privilege to carry to mum everything to share
Have we problems and fears
Is there trouble anywhere
We should never feel discouraged
Take it to mum to share
O what joy we often forfeit
Oh what needless anguish we bear
All because we do not carry everything to mum to share
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share
Our mum knows our every need
Take it to mum to share.
